Commodity Booms and Structural Transformation: The Role of Input Use and Land Inequality [ Abstract | Draft
This paper studies the effects of an agricultural commodity price boom on structural transformation. I construct a shift-share measure of exposure to the commodity shock by combining climate- and soil-induced variation in agricultural production patterns among municipalities in Brazil with fluctuations in international commodity prices between 2000 and 2010. I show that labor was reallocated away from agriculture towards the manufacturing sector in locations more exposed to the commodities boom. Using data from the Population and Agricultural Censuses, I argue that the results are consistent with greater use of capital inputs in agriculture, which worked as substitutes for farm labor, and greater land inequality in more exposed locations, which ultimately displaced workers from the agricultural sector.

O presente trabalho busca analisar as transformações pelas quais o pensamento macroeconômico passou no período pós-guerra, tanto em seu lado teórico como empírico, através da ótica do problema de identificação econométrico. Seja na crítica aos modelos macroeconométricos de larga escala da tradição keynesiana, na introdução da abordagem VAR, no uso da calibragem como estratégia empírica ou na estimação dos modelos DSGE, tanto pelos métodos clássicos como pela abordagem Bayesiana, analisa-se como o problema de identificação sempre esteve presente na discussão das ideias econômicas, fazendo parte dos pressupostos utilizados pelos macroeconomistas para pautarem o debate e proporem novas alternativas aos modelos já existentes.
